New York Chapter
of The S.I.S.T.A.H.S. Ministry
DIRECTOR, MINISTER CHERYL BRAXTON

Minister Cheryl Braxton was born in the Bronx, NY to James and Adelina Parker. She grew up in the "Throggs Neck Projects" where she lived with her 4 siblings: Tanya, James Jr. Eric, and Shannon. Upon her marrying she relocated to Westbury, NY where she now lives with her husband Deacon Anthony Braxton. Cheryl has three adult children, Kendra, La’Cher , and LJ. She is also the proud grandma of two, Amari and Kenidi.

As the Co-Chair representing the state of New York for WIN, (Women in the NAACP ) her first undertaking was a Domestic Violence Forum where she was honored by the presence and testimonies of domestic violence "Victors." Cheryl chooses this name over victim because she believes that once you have allowed God to deliver you out of this bondage you no longer are a victim but a victor! Cheryl‘s long held vision for a faith-based ministry addressing the issue of domestic violence has come to fruition with her pastor, Bishop Lionel Harvey’s blessing, she will be starting the “Balm in Gilead” at her church this March 2011.

Because of her love for writing, in her spare time she takes her pen to paper and lets the Holy Spirit be her guide. She is a co-author of "100 Words of Wisdom for Women". Cheryl is currently working on her second publication and says she has no idea when it will be finished but trusts that the Lord already knows and continues to seek His guidance in doing so.

She is an alumnus of The New York Theological Seminary where she received her certificate in Christian Ministry. Cheryl says that when she graduated, she knew this could not be the end and realized she needed more. As a result of that conclusion, she looks forward to once again enrolling as a fulltime student in the near future. Her goal is to obtain her MDiv / MSW. She holds a full time position as a Medical Biller with North Shore University Hospital, the largest employer on Long Island.

Cheryl and her family are members of the First Baptist Cathedral of Westbury where her Pastor, teacher, spiritual father and covering is the Bishop Lionel Harvey Presiding Prelate of Sword of the Spirit Christian Fellowship Inc.( www.WestburyFBC.org).

Cheryl says she attributes her passion for God and HIS word to a praying Grandmother who taught her about the Lord long before she knew how to spell HIS Name and to her mother who spends countless hours on her knees in intersession for all of her five children, and anyone else the Lord puts on her heart. When asked, "How she does it all?" Her answer is, "I don’t do it all, I just do what he anoints and gives me grace to do and I trust and rely on HIM for the provision to fulfill it!"

Cheryl’s heart’s desire is to see the world get saved and live with the power and authority that God has promised in HIS Word.

Breakthrough Praise - PRAISE SECURES VICTORY!

Instead of focusing all the time on that situation, on that mountain, START TO PRAISE HIM! God inhabits praise!

READ: Psalm 149:6-9. Here we see the PRAISE, coupled with the declaration of God’s Word, binds the enemy in chains.

The devil’s most common methods of attack are to bring discouragement, negativity, hopelessness, despair into our lives - to paralyse us from within - to get our eyes off God. If that’s what he’s about in your life, then the best way to deal with him is to START PRAISING THE LORD. Get your eyes back on the greatness of God and declare His praises. Sing and shout of His love, and His faithfulness, and His goodness, and His mighty power. And you watch the enemy flee. His power of discouragement - HIS LIES - will be broken! Hallelujah!

Praise secures victory!

Applying the Power

Scripture Of The Day: "The Lord said to Moses, 'How long will these people treat me with contempt? How long will they refuse to believe in me, in spite of all the signs I have performed among them?'" - Numbers 14:11 (NIV)

In Numbers 14:11, "The Lord said to Moses, 'How long will these people treat me with contempt? Will they never believe me, even after all the miraculous signs I have done among them?'”

In other words, “Children of Israel, how many times have I shown you my power? Why are you acting like this? You’ve been here before.”

On Easter Sunday little children at churches around the country will recite Easter poems about the power of the Resurrection. We will all celebrate our belief that Jesus Christ died on the cross and rose on the third day “with all power in His hands.”

But I wonder how many of us apply the power of the cross to our everyday lives? How many of us allow what we confess to become real in the midst of our circumstances?

How many of us find ourselves facing familiar situations, and like the children of Israel, like me, and even like my sweet little Ryann, we act as if we’ve never faced that situation before?

As we prepare to celebrate the cornerstone of our Faith, let us remember that because of the miraculous power of the cross we are no longer victims to the circumstances we face! We can apply the resurrection power to every situation in our lives because we are united with Christ (Ephesians 2:6) and we already have the victory!

“Thou art my beloved son in whom I am well pleased.”
(Mark 1:11)

This was the voice of God the Father which came through the heavens when the Holy Spirit lightened upon Jesus when his cousin John baptized him in the Jordan River. But in the very next verse after God’s affirmation of his son Jesus, God allowed him to be thrown into the fire.

“And immediately the spirit driveth him into the wilderness.”
(Mark 1:12)

Jesus was led into the wilderness for forty days being tempted of Satan. So the very same Holy Spirit that descended like a dove onto the son of God and illuminated him as God’s love also commanded him into the wilderness to deal with the adversary. “What? “I don’t get it!” That is what I said the very first time I read this story. What baffled me was that God said, for all to hear, that He loved him and that he was pleased with him but then in the next sentence inflicts 40 days of pain consisting of no food, no water and temptation the likes of which you and I have never experienced. I really needed some clarity. Then it hit me: maybe being loved by God and pleasing to Him is not necessarily a guarantee of a life free of pain and suffering, a life on easy street, a life when everyday is Sunday. It’s now my opinion that it takes pain, suffering and valley experiences to get us into the presence of God. After all, isn’t that where we all want to be? Pain is a part of life. Jesus said in John 16:33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have [perfect] peace and confidence. In the world you have tribulation and trials and distress and frustration; but be of good cheer [take courage; be confident, certain, undaunted]! For I have overcome the world. [I have deprived it of power to harm you and have conquered it for you.].

We are instructed how to live in the storm in Romans 5: 3-5: Moreover [let us also be full of joy now!] let us exult and triumph in our troubles and rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that pressure and affliction and hardship produce patient and unswerving endurance.

And endurance (fortitude) develops maturity of character (approved faith and tried integrity). And character [of this sort] produces [the habit of] joyful and confident hope of eternal salvation. So we can give thanks for the pain because God promised that our trials will build within us good stuff!

Of this I am certain: Pain will bring you to your knees. Pain will destroy the confidence we have in our flesh. Pain will develop our confidence in God. Hallelujah!

As we go through our times of pain let us remember and never forget II Corinthians 4:8-9:

(8) we are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed. We are perplexed, but not driven to despair.

(9) We are hunted down, but never abandoned by God. We get knocked down, but we are not destroyed. 10 Through suffering, our bodies continue to share in the death of Jesus so that the life of Jesus may also be seen in our bodies.

(11) Yes, we live under constant danger of death because we serve Jesus, so that the life of Jesus will be evident in our dying bodies.

(12) So we live in the face of death, but this has resulted in eternal life for you.

Final Word: Jesus’ time of temptation lasted 40 long days but the sustaining ministration of God’s angels was with him every step of the way. There may be times that our pain continues longer than we want, but just like with Jesus, God will give us the grace to endure, Hallelujah!

"Stick to the Plan"
Devotional by Deaconess Cheryl Braxton
HOW often do we let our minds wander?

Wander away from the task. Away from the step one and step two of it. Obstacles, they come in our lives. Some because of our bad choices; Some because of our wrong choices and some just because that is life and things do not always go according to our plan. One thing I have learned is that no matter the curve ball that you have been thrown or the detour you have to take, if the plan is God’s plan for YOU, it shall be done! One thing I have learned is that before you attempt to determine your own route, Stop, let GOD determine it! His directions are always precise. But, without his guidance, we have a tendency toward error. Many things are good but that good thing may not be your good thing. Allow yourself time with Him, meditate on him and how your Abba daddy God has brought you through! Meditate on his word. Let it sink into the deepest recesses and crevices of your mind body and soul. Into the very essence of you and who you are. Then, listen! Listen without distractions to HIM as he ministers to your heart and guides your life with his plan for you and only you!

While what I say to you I know is real and good for all, I continue to at times not heed the voice of sound doctrine. Although as I continue to mature spiritually, emotionally, and physically, many times I have taken my eyes off of his word and my ears away from the spirit of his voice, and attempted to make it MY SHOW ! One thing I have learned is that, It is not about me and it is not my show! As I write this to you, I write also to me as I listen to the spirit of God saying, stick to my plan. You see, he has already mapped out the paths for you and me to take in order to fulfill his will for our lives. You and I are different women, with different paths to achieve different goals but we have one common denominator and that is that everything in his plan is to HIS GLORY, which is why we need to stick to the Master Plan. This one final thing I have learned is that at the blessed age of 44 years young, I am still learning!

"Freedom"
Devotional by Deaconess Cheryl Braxton
My Mother shared some heartfelt sentiment with me recently. She let me know that thanks to Barack Obama’s election to the Presidency, she, for the first time in her adult life, felt totally free. My mother, like many other black women from her generation, can tell us firsthand what is was like to experience blatant racism. How it felt to be heavily scrutinized when walking into a supermarket to simply purchase a loaf of bread and a container of milk. Even though her father was an ordained minister of the famous Convent Avenue Baptist church in Harlem, and her family was considered middle class, she still felt and remembers even till today, the piercing and penetrating stares not just from the store employees but other shoppers as well; as though asking the question, what are they doing here?

As a child growing up in the Bronx I never felt I wasn’t free. I was either blind or my parents did a good job shielding me from the prejudices that were surly there. However as an adult today, I can look back and recall some instances that were in deed ,pure racism although I didn’t recognize it at the time. I was not able to relate to the inadequacy mom felt on our shopping excursions. I couldn’t quite understand why when I wanted to browse and take my time touching and feeling garments as they hung on the racks, she would want to hurry the purchase and get out of the store. I could not relate to anyone not wanting to go into a store to “just look”! To me it seemed like fun, but to my mom it was humiliation. I could not fathom why up until recently, my mom couldn’t go into a store just to buy one thing when one thing was all she wanted. She would say, “ I can’t go to the register with just one thing, they might think I have something else underneath my clothes or in my pocketbook that I am trying to take without paying.

You see, I didn’t walk in her shoes. My experiences as a child were different than hers. When I spoke to my mother the night of November 5th 2008 she cried over the phone like a baby and said, “Cheryl, I feel I can now walk into any store and buy just what I want, and leave whatever I don’t want, and take my time doing it! What a feeling that must be for her!

There is one other knowledge of being FREE my mom knows well of: The freedom that comes from knowing Jesus Christ. Because we know him, we will not be sinless but blameless, free from the power of sin. The Gospel truth frees us from the yoke of the Law. Free from our spiritual enemies, free in the service of God, free to the privileges of sons and daughters. Free from our own prejudices, and false notions: nothing more enslaves and entangles the soul than not knowing the truth! When you know the truth, you are free from the dominion of lust and passion; we are free when we know the truth and we choose to live under his Devine command. What is truth? The Word is truth, God is truth, knowing the Lord Jesus Christ is truth.

What Is True Freedom?

15-18 So, since we're out from under the old tyranny, does that mean we can live any old way we want? Since we're free in the freedom of God, can we do anything that comes to mind? Hardly. You know well enough from your own experience that there are some acts of so-called freedom that destroy freedom. Offer yourselves to sin, for instance, and it's your last free act. But offer yourselves to the ways of God and the freedom never quits. All your lives you've let sin tell you what to do. But thank God you've started listening to a new master, one whose commands set you free to live openly in his freedom!

19 I'm using this freedom language because it's easy to picture. You can readily recall, can't you, how at one time the more you did just what you felt like doing—not caring about others, not caring about God—the worse your life became and the less freedom you had? And how much different is it now as you live in God's freedom, your lives healed and expansive in holiness?

20-21 As long as you did what you felt like doing, ignoring God, you didn't have to bother with right thinking or right living, or right anything for that matter. But do you call that a free life? What did you get out of it? Nothing you're proud of now. Where did it get you? A dead end.

~Romans 6: 15-21 (The Message)

Have you come to a place in your spiritual life that you know for certain that if you were to die today you would go to heaven?

If you were to die today and stand before God and he were to say to you, “Why should I let you into my heaven?” What would you say?

Because you are a good person and do good things is not your ticket to heaven. There are many good people that do good things that never make it in. Heaven is not a place where good works can get you in to. Heaven is a free gift that is not deserved nor can it be earned. It is by grace that we are saved. (Ephesians 2)

Why we need to be saved, you may ask. Because we have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. We were born in sin. We cannot cleanse our selves no matter what we do. But because God loves us so much, he allowed His son Jesus to die on the cross. He who knew no sin became sin. Thereby giving us a way out of eternal damnation and into eternal life in heaven with Jesus and God the father who Jesus sits next to on the right side.

If you are ready, pray this prayer:

Lord Jesus I want you to come and take over my life right now. I am a sinner. I have been trusting in myself and my own good works. But now I place my trust in you. I accept you as my personal savior. I believe you died for me. I receive you as Lord and Master of my life. Help me to turn from my sins and follow you. I accept the free gift of eternal life. I am not worthy of it, but I thank you for it. Amen.

If you have prayed this prayer unto God, you are saved. The angels in heaven are rejoicing and God is well pleased!

If you are not already affiliated with a church please ask the Lord’s guidance in finding one fit to fill your spiritual needs.

May God richly bless you today and always.

"My Praise Is My Weapon"
Devotional by Deaconess Cheryl Braxton
Last week my church celebrated its second annual Holy Convocation. It was a four-day event. There were classes to be taught: preaching to be heard and fellowship with people some of which we have never met before, which was all scheduled for the first three days. The last day Saturday was to be an ordination ceremony and this was particularly special because for the first time, in the fifty-year history of my church, women were to be ordained into the office of Elders. Therefore, as you can probably imagine, we were all very excited for this occasion. On the second day during our lunch break, I discovered my car was not in the spot where I parked it: It was gone! I informed my Bishop, and was then escorted by church security, to the local precinct in order to file a complaint. Imagine my surprise when I was told my car was not stolen it was towed! Now at this point I am thinking “there absolutely must be some mistake, I have never gotten a ticket during the life of this car”. However, tickets on this car were not the issue. You see, back in 2005, un-be-known to me, my 18-year-old son thought he had Card Blanche to park wherever and whenever he choose. I was speechless when I was informed that in order to get my car back I needed to pay over $1300.00. Mind you, I had about $22.00 in my pocket and my husband who had to work this day and was 25 miles away, had about $15.00 in his. Neither one of us had any emergency resources in the bank to fall back on. We’ve been living paycheck to paycheck, not a good thing but that’s where we are! As for my son who lives on his own and struggles to pay his own rent, well it was his responsibility; and I could have made him pay it, but I did not want to wait the six months it would probably take for him to come up with the money.

Now at this point I had to make a choice, was I going to leave the convocation and go home as a defeated daughter of the Most High and give the enemy the victory or do I stay and praise my way thru?

Uhmm, I’m staying! I praised my way through the tears the hurt and the pain. I had to realize victory was mine and that God had already done what we needed HIM to do. We just needed to believe it and watch for the manifestation of it.

Let me let you know sistah’s that just one month prior to this happening, my husband and I made a promise to God that no matter what it took we were going to clear our names with all creditors, and get out of financial bondage. Because we understood that God could not use us while we were in slaved to our debtors. We were on our way to financial freedom. We had contacted them and made payment arrangements. I bought envelopes, stamps and had a determination like never before. However, because of this decision, we were seriously on a T-I-G-H-T budget! How do we deal with this new bill? This was not part of the plan, or was it? You see, when we seek the Lords guidance in something with our whole heart, remain obedient in following HIS direction and stand on HIS promise of being Jehovah-jireh, he will answer you and often in ways, you never would have expected. We had asked the Lord to help us clear our name, to become lenders and not borrowers. He showed us a debt we had but knew nothing about.

I stayed for the entire convocation and praised HIM with more fervency than ever before. I laid prostrate unto the Lord. There was even a time on Friday that I was the only one in church after the classes but before the evening service: I stayed for 8 hours meditating on HIS word and listening for HIM. I tell you my sistah’s God took me to a new level in HIM. He did a new thing and I will be forever grateful. By Sunday, God had opened up the window of heaven and on Monday, we picked up our car: clean, no scratches just the way we left it. He made a way out of no way, Yes HE did! So I’m here to tell you that, “ What ever you are up against keep the faith and Praise your Way through.

God was my Jehovah-shalom because the hour was dark and my situation desperate HE gave me reassurance through HIS peace.

God was my Jehovah-sabaoth I had no strength and there seemed no other recourse for deliverance from the pit of sadness that I was quickly falling into, he was my strong tower: He was my Lord of Hosts.

God was my Jehovah-jireh HE provided as only He could.

"Don't Go Unless You Know"
Devotional by Deaconess Cheryl Braxton
"Woe to me!" I cried. "I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty." Then one of the seraphs flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. With it he touched my mouth and said, "See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for." Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?" And I said, "Here am I. Send me!"
~ Isaiah 6:5-8

I recently had the blessing of getting my hands on a book that I highly recommend for anyone who feels the tugging on their heart for living a life dedicated to “Gods’ Ministry”. Hooper’s Evangelist & Ministers Handbook by Debora C. Hooper: Xulon Press. In chapter two titled the Qualifications of an Evangelist; Dr. Hooper speaks on the topic of, “Calling from God”. She says, “First and foremost to be a minister of the Word in any capacity, one must experience a call.” She references Acts 6:4 which talks about the call to exercising a particular ministry gift. She goes on to say that “God somehow makes the call known and the individual will know that they know it. Bishop Howard Tillman has been quoted in her book as saying, “To know that God has called you and exactly what he has called you to, is everything!

Now my dear sisters, (and to the brothers that may read this also) don’t go until you know!

When we think we are getting busy for the Lord or doing the Lords work we must be very careful to know whether this work, albeit honorable, is what God would have us do and also take into account if it is Gods timing for the work! Pray the question and await an answer, “Is God sending me or am I just doing this because of me”. This is not always a clear and obvious thing. Sometimes it’s not until we have already started a thing that we realize it’s not for us to do. This is why so many of our endeavors become laborious projects or drudgery, lacking the anointing of God thereby giving absolutely no joy. Hear me saints, when working for the uplifting of Gods Kingdom, it is hard and can be draining but, “The Anointing Makes the Difference” and there will be no shortage of joy. God may, through his grace allow a thing to achieve a desired goal through His permissive will and He can because He is Sovereign. But, how beautiful to be in His Devine will. When Isaiah heard from the Lord, there was no mistaken who was speaking and the charge which was given. At that point, it was no longer about his short coming, his sins; it was about doing for God through the power of God.

A simple prayer:

Lord, as I seek to do your will in my life, help me to have the spirit of discernment to recognize what is of you and what is of me. Help me father to stay clear of selfish gain: Where you send me father I want to go. I am but a sheep whose desire is to please my shepherd. Give me the power to do whatever you call me to do for I know the anointing makes the difference. I love you.

In Jesus Name, Amen.

Is the moving faith of a Praise and Worship ministry, founded in October 2007, to introduce dance as a way to relay a message of hope to survivors of trauma. The Samaritan Women combine Word Music and Movement to address social Issues. "Dance is the hidden language of the soul and of the body."
